iPhone Duo Review: Price, Features, Pros, Cons and What the Reviewers Say

The iPhone Duo is Apple’s first foldable iPhone. It folds like a book, opens into a 7.6-inch tablet-sized screen, and starts at $1,999 for 256GB. It went on sale on October 23, 2026, and the first wave of reviews is in. Most reviewers agree that Apple has built the best-made foldable yet, with a crease you can barely see. Most also agree it is heavy, has no Face ID or telephoto camera, and is a first-generation product that many people should wait on. This guide covers the price of every model, the full specs, what the Duo does best, where it falls short, and what the biggest YouTube reviewers think of it.

How we put this guide together

Prices and specs come from Apple’s announcement and technical specifications page. Test results and opinions come from the published reviews, credited by name, and the YouTube videos linked below. We have not run our own tests. Last checked: October 24, 2026.

Key takeaways

  • Price: $1,999 (256GB), $2,199 (512GB), $2,599 (1TB) and $3,199 (2TB) in the US. In the UK it is £1,999 to £3,199.
  • Best feature: the 7.6-inch inner screen with a nano-texture matte finish that hides the crease better than any other foldable, according to almost every review.
  • Biggest compromises: no Face ID (Touch ID in the side button instead), no telephoto camera, and a weight of 254 g, which makes it the heaviest iPhone yet.
  • Battery: better than reviewers expected. Tom’s Guide measured 13 hours 20 minutes of web browsing, over three hours more than the Galaxy Z Fold 8.
  • Apps: Apple’s own apps look great, but popular apps like Spotify, Google Maps and Discord don’t yet fill the big screen properly.
  • Durability: IP68 water and dust resistance, but JerryRigEverything’s test got sand into the hinge and broke the inner screen in a bend test.

iPhone Duo price and release date

Apple announced the iPhone Duo on September 9, 2026, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Pre-orders opened on October 16 and the phone went on sale on October 23 in the US and more than 70 other countries and regions, including the UK, Canada, Australia, India, Japan and Germany. It reaches 28 more countries on October 30.

It comes in two colors, Star White and Night Sky, and four storage sizes. Here is what each one costs:

In the US, Apple Card Monthly Installments start at $83.29 a month over 24 months. Apple’s new Upgrade lease, run with Klarna, starts at $57.99 a month. There is no charger in the box, only a USB-C cable.

Official accessories

  • iPhone Duo Case, $79: a two-part case that wraps both halves, in sand or navy blue.
  • iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand, $129: a folio cover with a built-in stand that holds the phone at many angles, in navy blue or taupe.

Both work with MagSafe and Qi2 chargers. Apple Pencil (USB-C) support for both screens is coming in a software update later in 2026.

Design and hinge

The iPhone Duo is a book-style foldable. Closed, it is a 5.4-inch phone roughly the size of a passport. Open, it becomes a 7.6-inch tablet that Apple says is the thinnest iPhone it has ever made, at 5.2 mm. Apple CEO John Ternus called it “the most transformational change to iPhone since the original.”

The frame is grade 5 titanium with a mirror-polished finish. The hinge has more than 100 parts, supports the center of the screen when the phone is open, and uses magnets to snap it shut. Reviewers love it. Marques Brownlee praised the way its resistance changes as you open it, and Tom’s Guide’s Mark Spoonauer called the Duo “the best designed foldable phone I’ve ever tested.”

The trade-off is size. At 254 g it is heavier than the iPhone 18 Pro Max (249 g), and at 11.3 mm closed it is much thicker than a normal iPhone. Gizmodo’s Raymond Wong found it made his front pocket sag and bulged in tight jeans. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 is 53 g lighter and 1.6 mm thinner when closed.

Displays and the crease

The big story in almost every review is the inner screen. Apple put a nano-texture matte finish on it, the same anti-glare idea it uses on some MacBooks and iPads, and it does two jobs. It cuts reflections, and it hides the crease down the middle.

“I had a hard time making out the crease on the iPhone Duo while viewing content even when outside,” wrote Mark Spoonauer at Tom’s Guide. Engadget’s Sam Rutherford said “the crease disappears when you look at it head-on.” Gizmodo found you can still feel it under your finger, but less than on the Galaxy Z Fold 8. Mrwhosetheboss said the matte coating makes rival foldables look unusually reflective by comparison.

There is a cost. Tom’s Guide found the matte finish mutes colors a little. The inner cover layer is also soft: JerryRigEverything scratched it at level 2 on the Mohs scale, and fingernails left marks. Apple designed this layer to be replaceable, and replacing it costs $49 without AppleCare+.

The 5.4-inch outer screen has the same shape as the inner one, which means apps don’t need to stretch or jump around when you open the phone. Both screens run at up to 120Hz and reach 3,000 nits in bright sunlight.

iOS 27 on a foldable

Apple rebuilt parts of iOS for the Duo. When you open it, you see two Home Screen pages side by side, with widgets on the left. The Dynamic Island turns vertical, and app controls move to the sides so you can reach them while holding the phone like a book. Apps move smoothly from the outer screen to the inner one when you unfold it.

For the first time on an iPhone, you can run two apps side by side in Split View, open two windows of the same app, and save app pairs. StandBy works on either screen, so you can half-fold the Duo on a desk as a clock or photo frame.

Reviewers were impressed with Apple’s own apps. CNET’s Abrar Al-Heeti noted iOS 27 “working across both screens without hiccups.” The problem is third-party apps. Marques Brownlee found Spotify, Google Maps, Discord, X and Google Calendar showing black bars or shrunken layouts on the big screen. Wired said “several apps I’ve tried to open on the sprawling 7.6-inch screen look awful.” Apps not yet built for iOS 27 leave a blank strip down one side.

Split View is also limited. You get two apps at once, side by side in landscape, and you can’t resize them. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 can run three or more apps at once.

Performance

The Duo uses the same A20 Pro chip as the iPhone 18 Pro, built on a 2nm process, with a vapor chamber to keep it cool. In benchmarks it matches the iPhone 18 Pro and is well ahead of Samsung’s foldable.

Under sustained load the story is less clean. Mrwhosetheboss found the Duo slows down more than the iPhone 18 Pro Max in long gaming or stress tests, and The Verge’s Allison Johnson found it got hot and laggy during extended camera use.

Cameras

The Duo has two rear cameras: a 48MP Fusion Main camera and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide. There is no separate telephoto lens. Instead, the main camera crops in for a 2x zoom that Apple calls optical quality, and digital zoom goes to 10x.

In good light and in low light, reviewers found the photos strong. Tom’s Guide said the Duo “wins hands-down” in low light against the Galaxy Z Fold 8, and Mrwhosetheboss said the results were better than he expected.

Zoom is where it falls behind. At 10x, Tom’s Guide said the Duo’s photo looked “like a blurry water color” next to the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Mrwhosetheboss said the missing telephoto alone was enough to put him off buying one. Photographer Tyler Stalman pointed out there is also no ProRes or Log video, which serious video shooters will miss. Marques Brownlee found low-light shots landed closer to the cheaper iPhone 17e than to the Pro models.

The folding design adds a few clever tricks:

  • Rear-camera selfies: use the outer screen as a viewfinder to take selfies with the much better main camera.
  • Duo Preview: shows the person you are photographing a live view on the outer screen.
  • Kid Cue: plays Peanuts animations on the outer screen to get children to look at the camera.
  • Smart Take: uses on-device AI to capture automatically when the phone is propped up hands-free. Gizmodo called it overrated.

The under-display camera on the inner screen is weak. Tom’s Guide measured it at about 4.4MP, and both Gizmodo and Mrwhosetheboss called out its low quality. It is fine for FaceTime, not for selfies.

Battery life and charging

Battery life is one of the nicer surprises. The Duo has two batteries, one in each half, that work as one. Apple claims up to 24 hours of mixed use, 31 hours of video on the inner screen and 44 hours on the outer screen.

Bar chart of Tom's Guide battery test results: iPhone 18 Pro Max 17 hours 31 minutes, Motorola Razr Fold 14 hours 44 minutes, iPhone Duo 13 hours 20 minutes, Galaxy Z Fold 8 10 hours 6 minutes

Tom’s Guide web browsing test over 5G at 150 nits. The Duo was tested on its inner screen and lasted over three hours longer than the Galaxy Z Fold 8.

Other reviewers found the same thing. Engadget got 28 hours 48 minutes of local video playback. Marques Brownlee usually ended the day with more than 30% left. Tech Advisor’s Britta O’Boyle finished heavy days at about 25% and lighter days at about 40%. The Verge was less lucky, with about 30% left after six and a half hours of screen time. Gizmodo saw 5.5 to 7.5 hours of screen-on time, depending on use.

Charging is fast with the right adapter. Apple says it reaches 50% in about 20 minutes with a 60W charger. Tech Advisor measured 32% in 15 minutes and 57% in 30 minutes. MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging top out at 25W.

Durability and repair costs

Apple has made the Duo tougher than most foldables. It is rated IP68, which means it can survive 6 meters of water for 30 minutes and is sealed against dust. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is only IP48, which means it isn’t fully protected from dust. The outer screen uses Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple says is three times more scratch resistant than before.

Real-world tests are mixed. Joanna Stern ran the Duo through a folding robot for four nights, about 32,640 folds, and found no noticeable wear. The hinge was only slightly stiffer afterward.

JerryRigEverything was harder on it. Zack Nelson buried the phone in sand and dirt, and grit got into the hinge so it would no longer close fully. “The dusty Duo is damaged,” he said. A bend test against the fold left green lines across the inner screen and finally killed it. “The iPhone Duo does not survive my durability test,” Nelson concluded. That test goes far beyond normal use, but it is a good reason to keep the Duo away from the beach and to avoid pressing on the screen when it is open.

If something does break, repairs are expensive without AppleCare+:

RepairWithout AppleCare+With AppleCare+
Inner (folding) display$999$99
Outer display$379$29
Back glass$199$29
Inner screen cover layer$49$19
Battery service$229$0
Other damage$1,499$99

US prices as reported by Appleosophy. AppleCare+ for the iPhone Duo costs $19.99 a month.

Budget for AppleCare+

An inner screen repair without cover costs half the price of the phone. If you are buying a $2,000 first-generation foldable, AppleCare+ is worth serious thought.

iPhone Duo’s winning features

  1. The best crease-hiding screen on any foldable

The nano-texture inner screen cuts glare and makes the crease close to invisible when you look at it straight on. This is the feature nearly every reviewer led with.

  2. Battery life that beats Samsung

Over three hours more than the Galaxy Z Fold 8 in Tom’s Guide’s test, and most reviewers ended the day with plenty left.

  3. Pro-level performance

The A20 Pro chip matches the iPhone 18 Pro in benchmarks and is about 35% faster than the Fold 8 in single-core tests.

  4. IP68 water and dust resistance

Rare on a foldable. Samsung’s rival is only IP48.

  5. Software that feels finished, at least for Apple’s apps

Moving between screens, Split View and the new layout work smoothly, and reviewers called the experience the most polished of any foldable.

  6. A premium hinge and build

Titanium frame, a hinge that holds at any angle, and magnets that close it with a satisfying snap.

iPhone Duo’s shortcomings

  • No Face ID. Unlocking is by Touch ID in the side button. Marques Brownlee found a built-in delay that makes it feel slow, and 9to5Mac called the switch “the hardest thing to adjust to.” Gloves make it worse.
  • No telephoto camera, ProRes or Log video. Zoom photos are clearly worse than on the iPhone 18 Pro.
  • Heavy and thick. 254 g and 11.3 mm closed, heavier than the iPhone 18 Pro Max and noticeably bulkier than the Galaxy Z Fold 8.
  • Third-party apps aren’t ready. Big names still show black bars or stretched layouts on the inner screen.
  • Weak under-display selfie camera. About 4.4MP, fine only for video calls.
  • Limited Split View. Two apps only, with no resizing.
  • No Action Button and eSIM only. There is no physical SIM slot.
  • The price. $1,999 to start, $3,199 for 2TB, and close to $1,000 to replace the inner screen without AppleCare+.
  • First-generation bugs. Gizmodo saw keys near the crease stop working until a restart and one random reboot. The Verge found it ran hot.

What the YouTube reviewers say

Most of the big tech YouTubers posted their reviews around October 21. Here is what the most influential channels made of the Duo, with their videos.

Marques Brownlee (MKBHD): “First generation fun”

One of the most influential tech reviewers on YouTube liked the Duo more than most foldables he has tested. “I feel like the iPhone kind of mogs the Samsung,” he said, and he called it “a really fun phone for people to use.” He praised the matte screen, the hinge, the smooth handoff between screens and the battery, and pitched it as an iPad mini that fits in your pocket.

He was just as clear about the downsides: “I’ve reviewed a lot of foldables, and this thing definitely has its downsides.” Those were the slow Touch ID, the weight, the cameras and unoptimized apps. His overall line: it is “polished around the edges, but kind of rough in the middle.” Should most iPhone owners upgrade? “For most of them, it’s probably no.”

Mrwhosetheboss: “iPhone Duo is Messier Than You Think”

Arun Maini was the most skeptical of the big reviewers. He loved the nano-texture screen and found the camera better than expected in daylight and low light. But he listed a long run of problems: no telephoto, a weak under-display selfie camera, slower charging, bigger slowdowns under load than the iPhone 18 Pro Max, a body almost 30% thicker than the Pro Max, and Split View windows you can’t resize. For most people, his advice is to buy the iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max instead.

Watch: iPhone Duo is Messier Than You Think, Mrwhosetheboss.

The Verge: “a messy, expensive, good time”

Nilay Patel and Allison Johnson gave the Duo a mixed but affectionate review. “It is expensive, it’s full of compromises, and it can be incredibly frustrating to use,” they wrote, calling it “one of Apple’s messiest first-generation products in a long time.” They compared it to the first MacBook Air: a delight for early adopters, and probably frustrating for everyone else.

iJustine: won over by the portability

Justine Ezarik spent a week with the Duo and came away a fan. According to review roundups, it was the portability, a tablet-sized screen that fits in a pocket, that won her over. She also posted an unboxing and setup video if you want to see what comes in the box.

Watch: iPhone Duo Review: A week with the folding iPhone! and iPhone Duo Unboxing, set up and first impressions!, iJustine.

JerryRigEverything: “Destroyed”

Zack Nelson’s durability tests are where many buyers look before trusting a new phone. The outer screen held up well, scratching only at level 7. The inner screen and hinge didn’t. Dust jammed the hinge, and his bend test broke the folding display. “The iPhone Duo does not survive my durability test,” he said.

iPhone Duo vs Galaxy Z Fold 8

The Duo’s main rival is Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8. Tom’s Guide says the Duo costs about $100 more. Here is how they compare in its tests:

In short: the Duo is tougher, faster, lasts longer and hides its crease better. The Fold 8 is thinner, lighter, has a zoom camera and better multitasking. If you already use an iPhone, Mac and Apple Watch, the Duo’s software is the bigger draw.

Should you buy the iPhone Duo?

Buy it if you read, watch video or work on your phone a lot and have wanted an iPad mini you can carry in your pocket. Buy it if you are fully in Apple’s ecosystem, can live without Face ID and a zoom lens, and the price won’t stretch you. It is the best-made foldable you can buy right now.

Wait if you mostly use your phone one-handed, care about zoom photography, or rely on apps like Spotify, Google Maps or Discord that don’t yet use the big screen well. Several reviewers, including Wired and WAtoday’s David Swan, suggest waiting for the second generation. The iPhone 18 Pro is lighter, cheaper and has a better camera.

Tip: check your apps first

Before you buy, try the Duo in an Apple Store with the three or four apps you use most. Whether they fill the inner screen properly will decide how much you enjoy it.
