Thursday-night doorbusters have largely disappeared. Since 2020, big retailers have kept stores closed on Thanksgiving and spread more of their deals online and across November. In-store, the best limited-quantity deals still tend to go in the first few hours.
States where most stores must close
In Maine, Massachusetts and Rhode Island, state laws stop most large stores from opening on Thanksgiving Day. That applies even to chains that open elsewhere. In 2025, Stop & Shop and Whole Foods closed all their stores in those states while opening in others. If you live there, assume a store is closed unless it says otherwise.
Tips for Thanksgiving and Black Friday shopping
Shop the day before
Wednesday, November 25 is usually one of the busiest grocery days of the year, but stores are open with full hours. If you can, finish your Thanksgiving shopping before Thursday.
Check your store, not just the chain
Hours on Thanksgiving vary by location, especially for pharmacies, malls and franchise stores. Use the store locator on the retailer’s website or app before you set off.
Don’t count on the pharmacy
Even when a supermarket is open, its pharmacy is often closed. If you need a prescription, pick it up by Wednesday or find a 24-hour Walgreens or CVS.
Get there early on Black Friday
